On-Campus Living

In recent years, many renovations were made to improve the residence halls and support our students' success in the community. Check out the Housing and Residential Life website for more information.

To help prepare for moving into the residence halls, we have prepared a few tips for packing and living with a new roommate:

  • Contact your roommate(s) as soon as possible once you receive your housing assignment letter in late July. This way you can get to know your them and plan for who is bringing what for your room.

  • When packing, be attentive to what you bring and make a concerted effort to leave non essentials at home for now.

  • Be candid with your roommate(s) about expectations and complete a Roommate Agreement available from your Resident Assistant. This agreement will help you work out all the details of living together, including when you study and sleep to sharing your stuff and the tidyness of your room.

  • Be considerate of each other's needs. Each person experiences college differently. Respect each other, and work together to make a good transition.

  • Don't expect changes in behavior and actions overnight. Working through roommate issues takes time.

  • Communication is key to working out any issue. Do not let issues get worse by ignoring them or complaining about them to friends and family. Be upfront with your roommate(s)

  • Get out of your room, use campus resources, and get involved. There are many study areas, recreational areas, and things to do at Michigan Tech. Invite your roommate(s) to go along, and continue to foster your friendship.

  • You might have your own room at home, but moving into the residence halls is a completely different story. Suddenly one room is your whole house. Below is a list of suggested items to bring with you to college. Don't worry, if you forget something, we have a Wal-Mart Supercenter, ShopKo, and OfficeMax just five minutes from campus. The Campus Store, located in the Memorial Union Building (MUB) on campus, is a good source for academic items too.
