Orientation Mission/Goals

Mission Statement for Orientation 2008:
The mission of the orientation program at Michigan Technological University is to facilitate the academic and social transitions of new undergraduate students to the campus community by: providing programs and services which communicate adademic expectations, introducing students to campus resources and available support services, and sharing information on social and developmental transitions that may arise while attending college. Participation in the Orientation program helps new first-year students arise while attending college. Participation in the Orientation program helps new first-year students Create the Future here at Michigan Tech, by laying a strong foundation for their university experience and offering a welcoming atmosphere where students can develop connections to their new environment.

Program Goals:

 
  • To provide a comprehensive introduction to their academic program, including curriculum requirements and academic expectations, through collaboration with academic departments.

  • To allow opportunities for new students to meet and begin to develop relationships with faculty, staff, current students, and their peers in the incoming class.

  • To provide an introduction to academic advising, course selection, and registration.

  • To excite new students about being a member of the Michigan Tech community.

  • To offer information and exposure to campus offices, services, and co-curricular involvement opportunities available.

  • To assist new students in understanding their rights, responsibilities, and opportunities within their new home and academic community.

  • To present engaging social programming that allows new students to meet people, immerse themselves in the campus culture, and to enjoy their orientation experience.

  • To discuss and reflect on common first-year experiences with diversity and multiculturalism, person wellness, independence and personal responsibility, time management, and community living.
