Computers, RoverNet, and Resnet - Your Guide for getting wired up at Tech

Laptop or Desktop PC?- [top]

This is one of the most frequently asked questions that we receive from students and families each year. Most Michigan Tech students own desktop computers. Desktops allow you to work comfortably in your residence hall room. Generally they are less expensive than laptops, but they are not portable.

Laptop computers are versatile if you would like to get away from your room to work. Additionally, Michigan Tech Telecommunications offers RoverNet, a free wireless service for students who have laptops or PDAs with wireless capabilities. RoverNet users can surf the Internet from many public areas on campus including the library, Memorial Union Building, and residence hall study lounges.

However, students are not required to own personal computers. Michigan Tech is equipped with several excellent computing facilities. Access to the various computer labs is determined by major.

Before puchasing a new computer, you may wish to consult the Resnet Computer specifications page to ensure that your machine is properly equipped for Resnet.

What is Resnet? - [top]

Residence Life Network (Resnet) is a campus-wide computer network that provides high-speed access to electronic resources both on campus and around the world. Resnet consists of both the University's network infrastructure and student-owned computers. A group of talented operators and service providers are available to make sure that students always have the access they need. The physical cables are Category 5 Ethernet lines that allow and optimal transfer rate of 10Mbps. This, coupled with an expert base of support services, provides fast, 24-hour access to the web and all of its resources.

For more information, visit www.resnet.mtu.edu.

What is RoverNet? - [top]

RoverNet is a free wireless network for Michigan Tech students and staff designed so you can take your laptop or PDA and "rove" around campus, gaining access to network resources (such as the web and email). Information about the specific campus locations where RoverNet is accessible can be found on the RoverNet website. In the wireless "hot zones" (Memorial Union Building, library, residence hall study lounges, etc) you'll need a WiFi certified 810.11b compliant network card. For both wired and wireless locations, you'll need a SSL capable browser (ie: Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox). RoverNet is not available in individual residence hall rooms.

For more information, visit www.rovernet.mtu.edu.

How do I get RoverNet?- [top]

RoverNet is a free wireless internet service for all Michigan Tech students, and all you need to do is log in with your ISO username and password (initially set to your Michigan Tech ID number).

What do I need to get connected?- [top]

Getting connected is simple. All you need is a computer, network card, and Category 5 Ethernet cable which can be purchased through the Campus Bookstore if you don't have one of your own. Then, simply follow the instructions listed on the Resnet website in the Support section. It would be wise to print these instructions prior to your arrival at Tech, so you can consult them during the configuration process.

Need more information?- [top]

The Support section of the Resnet website has answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. If you have further questions, please attend one of the Resnet information sessions during Orientation week or email resnet@mtu.edu.
