When will I get my housing and roommate assignment? - top Students will receive a letter in late July notifying them of their room, hall, mailing address and roommate assignment. Do all first-year students live on campus? - top The University requires all first-year students not living with their families to live in the residence halls. When will I receive information about Orientation? - top Students receive preliminary information in late February. More specific information is sent in late June. Also, students can browse our web site for current updates. When will I need to determine my major? - top It is ok to come to Michigan Tech without a declared major. However, students will need to select a major by the time they have completed 40 credits or 3 semesters. Students who wish to change their major may do so at any time provided they meet the criteria of the department they would like to enter. Who can help me with Financial Aid questions? - top Call Financial Aid at 906-487-2622 during normal business hours, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. In the summertime, MTU’s business hours are from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, eastern daylight time. Also check their website for more information.
Do I have to go to Orientation? - top
Yes. Orientation for First-Year
Students begins on Sunday August 21 and will continue through Saturday,
August 27. Participation is required for all new
students. You will be able to move into the residence hall beginning at
noon on Saturday, August 20. A separate transfer student Orientation is
required for all entering students that have attended
college prior to enrolling at MTU and will be transferring in over 30
earned college credit hours. What happens at Orientation? - top
Lots of fun stuff! Along with
the opportunity to meet new friends, you will get your Tech express
card, buy books, discover what professors expect, visit campus
facilities, hear about campus life from upper-class students, and get
comfortable in your new home. Are parents encouraged to attend Parent Orientation? - top Attendance at Parent Orientation is optional; however, parents are encouraged to participate. Parent Orientation is on Sunday, August 21 and Monday, August 22, 2004. Should I bring a computer to campus with me? - top Having your own computer is not necessary. Computer terminals are available in each academic department with 24 hour access. If you do have a computer, you can access high-speed internet for about $20.00 a month. What kind of cell phone service is available at Michigan Tech? - top MTU has formed a partnership with Cellular One to offer students discounts on cellular service. Cellular One has a kiosk on campus in the Memorial Union Building that is open weekdays at 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. You can call ahead to arrange for service before you arrive. If you activate your service prior to August 1, 2005, you will receive a special bonus. You can find more information at www.tc.mtu.edu/mtucellular. Where can my family stay when I arrive for Orientation? - top Only incoming students are permitted to stay in the residence halls during Orientation. Check our Lodging Information page for a list of lodging options. What classes am I going to take? - top First-year students in the
School of Business and Economics, School of Technology, College of Arts and
Sciences, and the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science will
have the opportunity to register on-line in the spring. Detailed
instructions will be mailed to you prior to registration. Your selected
program of study, as well as your ACT/SAT scores, are the bases for initial
placement. Schedules may be altered during Orientation if you receive
transfer credit and/or college advanced placement credit. A copy of your
schedule will be sent to your MTU e-mail account after you have registered. If you are in the College of
Engineering, the Office of Student Records and Registration will prepare
your schedule for you. Your schedule is based upon requirements specific to
your program of study. ACT/SAT scores, college advanced placement results,
and transfer credits are all considered when your class schedule is created.
A copy of your schedule will be sent to your MTU e-mail account in late
July. All new first-year students will register for UN 1001, Perspectives on Inquiry, during Orientation. Electives such as modern language and physical education courses may also be scheduled at that time. I'm a transfer student, how will my credits be evaluated? - top You will need to send an official transcript to MTU Transfer Services Office from the college or university you currently attend. Your credits will then be evaluated based on course content, number of credits per course, etc. and then matched with similar MTU courses. Credit will be awarded based on the similarity of courses. How are my AP credits going to help me? - top University credit may be earned through successful performance on AP tests. Check the Transition to Tech booklet for more information. Bring a copy of your scores with you to Orientation in case you have any questions at that time. Will there be any placement testing opportunities before classes start? - top Several placement tests will be offered on-line and during Orientation to be sure that you get off to a great start. You will be contacted by mail or at your MTU e-mail address concerning any on-line tests that you may be eligible to complete. All other placement tests will be offered during Orientation. Please note that if you would like to continue your modern language studies, you must pre-register to take the Modern Language Placement Test (French, German, or Spanish). Where should I go if I'm having problems with coursework? Are tutoring services available? - top There are many resources designed to help students succeed at Michigan Tech. Almost every department has a learning center designed for assisting students. Professors have office hours in which they will answer your questions. Each student has an academic advisor who can help you. Student Affairs and First-Year Programs are also here to help. Should I work while in college? - top According to the research, working part-time (10 hours or less per week) on campus has a positive impact on student persistence, bachelor degree attainment, timely graduation, and the probability of enrolling in graduate school. The research also shows that working off campus has a negative effect on persistence and the attainment of a bachelor's degree. Do I need a car on campus? How can I register a car? Where should I park? - top Due to the Wadsworth Hall renovations, there will be a 30 minute unloading time limit during move-in of Orientation after which you will need to move your vehicle. Orientation Team Leaders and Resident Assistants will be available to direct you to designated parking lots. Students living on campus are encouraged to register their vehicles over the summer at www.housing.mtu.edu/carregister. You may begin to register your car after June 1. 2005. The deadline for online registration in August 14. 2005. If you register by this deadline, your parking decals will be included in your residence hall check-in packet. You may also register your vehicle with your residence hall Management Assistant (MA) upon arrival to Michigan Tech. Commuter vehicle registration can be done online at www.admin.mtu.edu/em/students/info/vehreg_form.php or in the Office of Student Records and Registration (Room 110 in the Administration and Student Services Building). Commuter students may park in lots 9, 26, and 32 during Orientation, but should register their vehicles by the end of the week. What is an internship and what is a "co-op" and what are their advantages? - top The goal of the co-op program is to provide practical experience for the student before graduation. Co-op's are often 3, 6, or 9 month periods when the student will work in an industry field related to his or her major. College credit may be received if the company's co-op program is University approved. An internship is similar to a co-op, except that internships occur during the summer semester and no college credit is given. The University Career Center has much more information on these opportunities. When should I first visit the Career Center? - top Students will be given an opportunity during Orientation week to visit the Career Center. Many students are under the false impression that the Career Center is only for seniors who are graduating. Students should become familiar with the Career Center and their services during their first year. What social/academic organizations are open to MTU students, and how can I become involved? - top There are around 200 student clubs and organizations. Visiting the MTU Student Organization web page will give you an idea of some of the organizations and how you can get involved. What services does MTU provide for students with special needs? - top Students with special needs should contact Dr. Gloria Melton (gbmelton@mtu.edu), Associate Dean of Student Affairs, in the Office of Student Affairs at 906.487.2212. How safe is campus? What are the security services? - top Michigan Tech is located in the safest college town in Michigan and the eighth safest in the nation, according to the book Crime at College: The Student Guide to Personal Safety. These rating are based on a study of 467 cities and towns that have a college with 5,000 or more students enrolled. Emergency phones are located throughout campus and are marked with blue lights. Public Safety can also help you with further questions about safety. What if I have problems with my roommate? - top Students need to muster the courage to first discuss the problem with his/her roommate. If you can't resolve the issue(s), you should speak to your Resident Assistant (RA) or Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC) who will help. What if I have problems with a professor or a teaching assistant? - top Students who feel they have been treated unfairly should follow the grievance procedure outlined in the student handbook. Each first-year student will receive a copy of the handbook during Orientation.
